Why I decided to PowerPoint – Story behind PowerPoint Maths:

I have been teaching 25 years and have come to a firm conclusion that the pupils nowadays are a very visual generation. (We were the listening generation… Squad cars, Men from the Ministry, Hitchcock half-hour, Three wise men, Tracey Dark etc….remember?). The “now” generation as I said are VISUAL and are unable to process without seeing.

The more “accidental learning” and practical learning they do the better. Children nowadays use cell phones, remotes etc, and all high-speed electronic gadgets at their finger-tips. Visual and practical. Gone is the imagination.

Therefore I believe do as many visual and practical activities as you can. Always explain why! Children have enquiring minds and learn better when one explains ”why”. As you explain why a sum is to be done in a certain way or how something works, get them thinking.

I decided to PowerPoint my Maths lessons. I wanted to renew children’s interest in Maths. I wanted to make it alive. Stimulate them with colour. I bought a projector and laptop to get this project of mine on the road. I’m also having a lot of fun doing it, adding in effects and colour. From teaching like this, the kids in my classes have achieved very good results and I have covered the syllabus for the year faster than usual. Which gave me more time for revision. They truly do enjoy coming to the Maths class. Using my whiteboard they are able to write, group and interact with what I have created for them. I believe my new approach to teaching Maths has made the world of difference.

Home-schooling has enjoyed the development of PowerPoint Maths.

We don’t have to change what we teach but how we teach. Education also has to move forward, using more technology in the classroom stimulating kids to learn. This should be the objective of all teachers in the future.
